Dalai Lama's Dilemma
Dalai Lama says: "Tibet is an integral part of China but Tibetans want autonomy".
Why Dalai Lama does accepts Tibet as an integral part of China? Tibet has a geographical and social environment very different from China. Moreover, Tibet was never a part of China until 50s when China took over. It was a hostile takeover.Dalai Lama should have made a huge hue and cry through out the last 50 years for freedom. But he didn't do it for some reason.
Now Tibetan Primer accepts Tibet an integral part of China gives away all hopes of making Tibet a free nation. For me, it's like giving away without the doomsday fight. For a non-resident Tibetan it's a total failure. Had I been a part of Tibetan community, I would have felt cheated by Dalai Lama; giving away my land to the Chinese.
But hey, hang-on. Dalai Lama is not supposed to fight!!! He's Dalai Lama. Now this is exactly what happens when religion and politics gets mixed-up. Had Dalai Lama just remained a religious premier and given away all political decision-making to someone else from Tibet and not poked his nose into political affairs, things might have been different today. But not point talking about it now. Right now I guess Dalai Lama's trying to find a "Middle Path" by giving away Tibet but trying to retaining it's autonomy.
However, the Chinese cannot budge to Lama's offering for primarily 2 reasons:
1. Chinese are genetically not cut out that ways.
2. China has vested interests in Tibet for economic and (probably) defense reasons.
Tibet holds huge reserves of natural reserves that need to be exploited. Moreover, Tibet is the roof of the world; a beautiful place. That adds up to a lot of tourist attractions. Giving away Tibet as a free nation will ensure that China donot get any of these, and giving away autonomy ensures that nothing happens there.. No tourists, no mining!!
As for the international uproar and its impact on Olympics, we'll nothing is going to happen. Sportspersons from all around the world WILL participate unless THEIR security is jeopardized. A good example is the 1936 Olympics held in Nazi Germany (just 3 yrs before the WW-II). The whole world knew what Germany was up to and what they thought of Jews. And still 4000 athletes from 49 countries participated.Let's get this straight. Tibetans cannot jeopardize the Olympics, no matter what they do.
Dalai Lama is also knows the fact that China is the next big GUNDA after US. So no point taking PANGA with them. Hence, a middle path is the only option he's left with.
I guess Dalai Lama has no feasible option but to helplessly see what's happening. What expat Tibetans are doing worldwide is something they should have been doing all these years. Dalai Lama violence threatens with a resignation and he meets his philosophical objectives of non-violence. But who will meet the objectives of free country for thousands of protesting Tibetans?
